Tips for Speeding up your computer
Remember many factors
influence the speed and performance of your Computer. Here are some
tips to improve overall performance
1) Upgrade your Processor
to faster speed: This is the real hart of the computer and can
have the greatest impact on increasing speed and overall performance.
The maximum speed of your processor is determined by what kind of
system board you have. Please check your computer documentation to find
out the maximum speed of your processor. Processor upgrades range from $75
to $350 depending on how much you increase. If your system board is at or
near its maximum, then a system board upgrade may be needed, prices range from
$100 up to $300. This option although the most costly will do the most for
extending the usable life of your computer.
2) Increase the
amount of RAM memory in your computer: 32 MB is the
bare minimum for running Windows. Upgrading to 64 MB or 128 MB will
give Windows more head and leg room to operate and may help to reduce
crashes. memory upgrades range from $39 to $99. Please
check our web site for current pricing. You can find out how much
memory is in your computer by clicking on the System icon in your control
panel.
3) Upgrading your hard
drive: If your current hard drive is full or even near full your
performance will drop and the computer will struggle. You should never let the
amount of free space goes under 300 MB. If you go under 100 MB you run the
RISK of your computer crashing and not being able to restart windows. You can
find the amount of free space left in your hard drive by clicking on My Computer
then RighT clicking on your C drive and selecting Properties. ( also see
next tip ) Hard drive upgrades range from
4) Run
Windows DEFRAGMENTOR: Click on
My Computer then RighT clicking on your C drive and select Properties then click
on TOOLS then Defragment now. Running this will optimize the layout of files on
your hard drive so that they run quicker. It also helps reduce ware and tear on
your hard drive. It is good to run this every 20 to 40 user hours or about
once a week.
5) Limit the number
of items in your startup procedure: Computer Resorces can be severly reduced by too
many items loaded at startup. These items are sometimes seen as icons in the box
where the time is in the lower right of your screen. You can see the
amount of Resources avialable by clicking on START - PROGRAMS - ACCESSORIES
- SYSTEM TOOLS - RESOURCE METER. PLEASE NOTE that the total amount of
system resources CANNOT be increased by ANY means. It is SET by Windows itself
and CANNOT be modified ( You can blame Bill Gates for that one
). Resources are used up every time a program or file is run, when
you close or exit the resources may or MAY NOT be givin back or freed
up. Some MS Office products do not give back all of their resources back when
finished, the only way to get them back is to shutdown and Restart your
computer. It is good to restart your computer every so often or when
resources run low. This next part is for ADVANCED
USERS ONLY and can free up - With Win98 or WinME you can click
on START then RUN then type MSCONFIG and press enter then click on
Startup. This utlity alows you select which items to run each
time your computer starts up.
